Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989
9th November 2017
The 28-mile (45 km) barrier dividing Germany's capital was built in 1961 to prevent East Berliners fleeing to the West.

But as Communism in the Soviet Republic and Eastern Europe began to crumble, pressure mounted on the East German authorities to open the Berlin border. The Wall was finally breached by jubilant Berliners on 9 November 1989, unifying a city that had been divided for over 30 years.
